Liquid Amber is a striking deciduous feature tree well suited to Brisbane and surrounds, particularly in areas that experience slightly cooler winter nights. It is one of the most reliable trees for strong autumn colour in South East Queensland, with foliage turning rich tones of red, orange and gold as temperatures drop.

Its upright, symmetrical form creates a powerful focal point in larger front gardens, lawns and avenue plantings. In summer it provides generous shade, while in winter its bare branches allow light back into the garden — a valuable seasonal balance in subtropical landscapes.

Why it’s a feature tree

  • Reliable autumn colour in Brisbane conditions

  • Strong, structured canopy with formal appeal

  • Deciduous habit allows winter light

  • Creates scale and long-term presence in the garden

Planting companions
Keep underplanting simple and structured:

  • Liriope or Dwarf Mondo for a clean base

  • Ornamental grasses for softness beneath the canopy

  • Box or low hedging plants for formality

  • Camellia in slightly cooler, protected sites

Growing conditions & care (Brisbane)

  • Plant in full sun for best colour

  • Performs best in well-drained soil

  • Water regularly during establishment (first 12 months)

  • Moderate water needs in dry periods

  • Best suited to larger gardens as it matures

Mature height: approx. 10–20 metres
Mature width: approx. 6–10 metres

In Brisbane, Liquid Amber performs particularly well in open, sunny positions and is most impressive where there is space to appreciate its scale and seasonal display.
