St Helena Island is a heritage National Park off the coast of Brisbane. It was a high security prison from 1867 to the 1920's and then a prison farm until its closure in 1932. The original olive tree was planted in the late 1800's after being brought to the island from Europe by a visiting magistrate.

Many of our olive trees we sell you will notice are the 'Helena' olive variety, descendants from these very trees outlined above. We do sell other varieties as well.

Growing olive trees in your garden in Brisbane can be advantageous for several reasons. They are hardy, drought-tolerant, and well-suited to Queensland's subtropical conditions. The silvery foliage and attractive form make them aesthetically pleasing, contributing to a Mediterranean or coastal garden theme. Generally trees grown in Brisbane do not fruit, but you may find some small fruit.

Your olive tree will need to be positioned in a spot that gets full sun for at least six hours a day.

Please note, many interior magazines will show olives growing in pots indoors. However, it's essential to avoid keep olive trees indoors. These trees thrive in full sunlight and well-draining soil, which is challenging to replicate indoors. Growing them outdoors allows them to benefit from natural sunlight, proper air circulation, and the space they need to reach their full height and canopy spread.

Indoor conditions may lead to poor growth, susceptibility to pests, and an overall decline in the tree's health. Therefore, planting them in a suitable outdoor location ensures they can flourish and contribute to the visual appeal of your garden.
