Crepe Myrtle is a high-impact, deciduous feature tree for Brisbane and surrounds, celebrated for its long summer flowering season, graceful branching and beautifully mottled bark. From late spring through summer, clouds of flowers in shades of pink, white, red or mauve bring colour when many gardens are at their hottest.

In winter, the smooth exfoliating bark and sculptural framework provide interest even when the tree is leafless, making Crepe Myrtle a true four-season performer.

Why it’s a feature tree

  • Extended summer flowering display

  • Elegant branching and decorative bark

  • Deciduous habit allows winter light

  • Excellent for front gardens and courtyards

Planting companions
Keep the base light and sun-loving:

  • Lavender or Salvia for colour and pollinators

  • Lomandra or ornamental grasses for structure and movement

  • Gardenia or low hedging plants for contrast

  • Dwarf mondo or Liriope for a neat finish

Growing conditions & care

  • Performs best in full sun for maximum flowering

  • Prefers well-drained soil

  • Water regularly during establishment

  • Once established, it is drought tolerant

  • Prune in winter if required to maintain shape

Mature height: approx. 4–6 metres (dwarf and compact cultivars available)
Mature width: approx. 3–5 metres

In Brisbane gardens, Crepe Myrtle remains manageable and rewarding, offering colour, form and bark interest across the seasons.
