Swamp Banksia (Banksia robur) is a bold, architectural native shrub with large, leathery leaves and striking flower spikes that range from lime green to golden yellow, ageing to rich brown. Naturally found in swampy, coastal regions, it’s a dramatic feature plant for native gardens, rain gardens, or damp spots that other plants may shy away from. The rugged texture of its foliage contrasts beautifully with finer plants, while its nectar-rich flowers attract birds and pollinators.

This adaptable Australian native brings a strong sense of place and thrives with minimal fuss once established.

This is a banksia that doesn't mind our heavy soils and wet conditions. If you love banksias and have had trouble growing them, try this one.

Care Notes

  • Light: Full sun to part shade.

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained to boggy soils; thrives in sandy or acidic conditions. Tolerates poorly drained sites better than most Banksias.

  • Water: Likes consistent moisture—especially in dry periods—until well established.

  • Growth: Fast-growing shrub to 2–3 metres tall and wide.

  • Pruning: Light tip pruning after flowering encourages a compact shape.

  • Fertiliser: Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring.

  • Wildlife: Excellent for attracting birds, bees, and beneficial insects.

Ideal For: Native gardens, low-lying or wet areas, statement planting, or use in large pots with regular water.
